eBay Selling Fees: The Complete Guide

August 26, 20266 min read

eBay handles millions of transactions daily, but their fee structure confuses even experienced sellers. Between final value fees, insertion fees, promoted listings, and payment processing, the costs stack up quickly.

The main fee: final value fee

When your item sells, eBay charges a final value fee on the total amount of the sale — including the item price, shipping you charge, sales tax, and any handling fees.

For most categories in the US, the standard rate is:

  • 13.25% of the total sale amount
  • Plus $0.30 per order

On a $100 sale with $5 shipping: eBay takes $13.91 (13.25% × $105 = $13.91 + $0.30).

Insertion fees

eBay gives you 250 free listings per month. After that, it costs $0.35 per listing. This fee is charged when you list, not when you sell — so if an item doesn't sell, you've still paid.

However, you do get the insertion fee back as a credit if the item sells.

Category-specific rates

Not all categories use 13.25%:

  • 15%: Musical instruments, sporting goods, and some electronics
  • 12.35%–12.55%: certain business/industrial categories
  • Lower rates: some collectibles and art categories

Always check eBay's fee calculator for your specific category.

Promoted Listings

eBay's Promoted Listings let you pay extra (typically 2%–10% of the sale price) to boost your listing's visibility. This is an optional cost, but for competitive categories it can be essential.

Payment processing

eBay now uses its own managed payments system. The payment processing cost is included in the final value fee — there's no separate payment processing charge. This simplifies things compared to the old days of separate PayPal fees.

What you actually pay on $100 (US)

  • Item price: $100
  • Shipping: $5
  • Total: $105
  • Final value fee: $105 × 13.25% + $0.30 = $14.21
  • Effective rate: 13.53%

eBay vs Etsy vs your own website

  • eBay: 13.25% + $0.30 — higher fees but massive built-in audience
  • Etsy: ~9.5% combined — lower fees, niche audience for handmade/vintage
  • Stripe (own site): 2.9% + $0.30 — lowest fees but you drive your own traffic

Tips to reduce your eBay costs

  • Use free listing promotions — eBay periodically offers extra free listings
  • Be strategic with Promoted Listings — set a low ad rate (2%–3%) and only promote high-margin items
  • Price shipping carefully — shipping charges are included in the final value fee calculation
  • Bundle items — selling multiple items in one listing saves the per-order $0.30 fee
