Etsy Fees Explained: What Sellers Actually Pay

When you sell on Etsy, the platform doesn't just take one fee — it takes three. Understanding each one is the difference between pricing profitably and wondering where your money went.

The three fees

Every Etsy sale triggers three separate charges:

  1. Listing fee ($0.20/£0.20/€0.20): charged when you publish or renew a listing. Multi-quantity listings still count as one listing. This fee is never refunded even if you issue a refund.
  2. Transaction fee (6.5%): calculated on the total sale price, including the shipping charge you set. If you charge $5 for shipping, that $5 is also taxed at 6.5%.
  3. Payment processing (Etsy Payments): this varies by country — in the US it's 3% + $0.25. In the UK it's 2.5% + £0.25. Etsy deducts this before sending your payout.

What you actually pay on a $50 sale (US)

  • Listing fee: $0.20 (amortized across sales)
  • Transaction fee: $50 × 6.5% = $3.25
  • Payment processing: $50 × 3% + $0.25 = $1.75
  • Total: ~$5.20 (about 10.4% of the sale price)

The listing fee trap

The $0.20 listing fee is easy to dismiss on high-value items, but on a $5 product it adds 4% to your costs. And it applies every 4 months when the listing renews — even if the item doesn't sell.

Offsite advertising fees

Etsy also charges an offsite advertising fee (12%–15%) on any sale that results from a buyer clicking an ad for your listing on Google, Facebook, or other platforms. This is optional for sellers under $10K in annual sales, but mandatory above that threshold.

Shipping fees and transaction fees

A common mistake: sellers think offering "free shipping" (built into the product price) avoids fees. It doesn't — the transaction fee applies to the full amount the buyer pays, regardless of how it's split between item price and shipping.

Minimizing your Etsy costs

  • Batch your listings — the $0.20 fee is per listing, so multi-variant listings are more efficient
  • Price shipping separately when possible — but remember, shipping charges still incur the 6.5% transaction fee
  • Watch your effective rate — on a $10 sale, your effective fee rate is roughly 15%, not the 6.5% Etsy advertises
  • Consider Etsy Plus ($10/month) if you sell high volume — it includes some listing credits
