How Australian tax works

Australia uses a progressive tax system with a tax-free threshold of A$18,200. From July 2024, the Stage 3 tax cuts apply: 16% on $18,201–$45,000, 30% on $45,001–$135,000, 37% on $135,001–$190,000, and 45% above $190,000. A 2% Medicare levy applies to most taxpayers. Private health insurance can exempt you from the Medicare Levy Surcharge (additional 1-1.5% for high earners without cover).

What affects your take-home

  • Low and middle income tax offset (LMITO) ended June 2022
  • Private health insurance can exempt you from Medicare Levy Surcharge
  • Salary sacrifice to super reduces taxable income
  • HECS-HELP student debt repayments are income-contingent (not shown here)
  • Novated leases reduce taxable income but affect take-home

Frequently asked questions

What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?

High earners (over A$93,000 single / A$186,000 family) without private hospital insurance pay an additional 1-1.5% Medicare Levy Surcharge. This calculator shows the base 2% only.

What about HECS-HELP student loans?

HECS-HELP repayments are income-contingent and deducted after tax. Repayment rates range from 1% (income above $54,435) to 10% (above $151,207). This calculator does not include student loan repayments.

How does superannuation work?

Employers must contribute 11.5% of your salary into a super fund (2024-25, rising to 12% in July 2025). This is on top of your salary, not deducted from it. You can salary sacrifice additional amounts pre-tax.

How does this compare to a US paycheck?

Use the US Paycheck Calculator for comparison. Australia has no state income tax, but the 2% Medicare levy adds up. Super is comparable to employer 401k matching but mandatory.
