How Canadian tax works

Canada uses a graduated tax system with both federal and provincial layers. Everyone gets a basic personal amount (~$15,000 federally) that's tax-free. CPP (Canada Pension Plan) is 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $68,500. EI (Employment Insurance) is 1.66% on earnings up to $63,200. Quebec has its own pension plan (QPP) instead of CPP.

What affects your take-home

  • Quebec has QPP instead of CPP, and different provincial tax rates
  • RRSP contributions reduce taxable income (like a 401k in the US)
  • Provincial tax credits vary — many provinces have additional credits
  • Union dues are tax-deductible
  • Carbon tax rebates may apply depending on province

Frequently asked questions

How does Quebec differ from other provinces?

Quebec administers its own provincial tax (Revenu Québec) with different brackets and rates. It uses QPP instead of CPP, and EI rates differ. The basic personal amount is also higher ($18,056).

What is CPP and how much do I pay?

CPP (Canada Pension Plan) is 5.95% on pensionable earnings between $3,500 and $68,500. Your employer matches your contribution. Self-employed people pay both portions (11.9%).

Does this include provincial sales tax?

No. This is income tax only. Some provinces charge HST (combined), others charge PST separately, and some have no sales tax at all. Use the US Sales Tax Calculator for US state sales tax reference.

How does this compare to a US paycheck?

Use the US Paycheck Calculator for comparison. Canada has no state-level equivalent, but provincial tax layers are similar. CPP is comparable to US Social Security, and EI is like a limited unemployment insurance.
